Valentine’s Day: when raw materials become a message

Valentine’s Day brings to the fore what perfume does best: transforming an intention into an emotion. An accord is never ‘just’ a scent: it is a presence, a memory in the making, a signature that we sometimes recognise even before we see the person.

At H. Reynaud & Fils, we work daily on this alchemy between nature, precision and imagination, from the selection of aromatic materials to the creation of olfactory compositions for perfumery, cosmetics and everyday products.

Perfume: a memory written on the skin

Perfume has a unique advantage: it lasts over time.

  • The top notes (the first few minutes) create the initial impact and emotion.
  • The heart note establishes the personality and identity of the accord.
  • The base note leaves a lasting impression: what we remember hours later.

On Valentine’s Day, we often look for a scent that conveys one of two messages: closeness (skin, softness, reassurance) or declaration (projection, presence, a distinctive signature).

5 olfactory intentions, 5 sillage constructions

Saying “I’m thinking of you”: musks and soft woods (second skin effect)

“Clean” musks, light woods, and soft milky or amber facets create a fragrance of intimacy: discreet, enveloping, and very contemporary. In terms of formulation, the challenge is to achieve longevity and comfort without saturation.

Saying “I love you”: bright flowers

Rose, jasmine, orange blossom… floral scents speak a universal language: romantic, direct, elegant. To avoid déjà vu, we play on contrasts: a floral scent brightened by a hint of citrus, or warmed by an amber base note.

Saying “stay a little longer”: vanilla & sweet treats (controlled addiction)

Vanilla, praline, milk, caramel… Sweetness is a powerful emotional trigger. The key is balance: a sweetness that is too sugary can become cloying; structured with woods, resins, or a hint of spice, it becomes chic and lasting.

Saying “tonight, it’s us”: amber, resins, spices (nocturnal elegance)

Benzoin, labdanum, balsamic notes, spices: the result is a dense, velvety, sophisticated sensation. These base notes give depth to the creations and play a central role in the perception of quality.

Saying “I choose you”: dark woods & oud (intense signature)

The oud/dark woody register provides a strong identity that is often sought after in certain markets. It requires rigorous construction: power, texture, diffusion, while maintaining the clarity of the accord.

From idea to product: securing creation and reproducibility

Behind the emotion lies an industrial reality: stability, compliance, regularity of supply, and reproducibility.

With its production sites in France and its processing capabilities (extraction, purification, rectification, composition), H. Reynaud & Fils puts its industrial facilities at the service of customer projects, integrating quality and supply chain requirements.

Giving perfum,e as a gift means giving a material object + an intention.

Valentine’s Day is a key moment to remember that perfume is a language. And that this language always begins with the raw materials: their quality, traceability, and ability to transform into emotion.

At H. Reynaud & Fils, we love projects where we start with an intention (“sunshine,” “skin,” “signature oud,” “chic gourmand”) and end up with a stable, recognizable, and lasting creation, whether in perfumery or cosmetics.
